报告内容简介:

This talk presents a view of the process of dreaming as a narrative activity, within a view of narrative cognition as categorically distinct from the immediacy of phenomenal encounter. Dreaming does not conform to the enactive reciprocity between agent and environment assumed by predictive processing but instead involves a reciprocity between cognitive processing and cognition’s representational effects. Four key hypotheses underlying this position are explored, and their plausibility tested against evidence from the Threshold Worlds project and its dream survey (which I will introduce at the beginning of the talk). The first is that dreaming is a manifestation of narrative cognition, a sensemaking activity in a specifically narrative form. The second is that in dreams the perceptual faculties function as media of narrative representation. The third is that dream cognition is engaged with an implicit semiotic environment. And the fourth is that dreaming participates in the inherent reflexiveness of narrative, and in particular the mode of narrative meaning we call fiction.
